But it was something that the passengers weren’t privy to yet.

However, all that slowly started to change when the co-pilot returned to the cockpit while the stewardess went and spoke to a couple of her other colleagues before picking up the device at the front of the plane that allowed her to communicate with everybody on it.

‘Ladies and gentlemen. Please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts. Thank you.’

Will had not heard the request, but everyone else around him had, and they all started to comply with the order. Those who were stood up in the aisle sat down, and those who didn’t have their seatbelts fastened started to buckle up. Many of them chattered away to the person nearest, wondering why they had been asked to do such a thing mid-flight when it was a time for the seatbelt sign to be off. The plane wasn’t due to come in for landing for a while yet, so it couldn’t be for that. There wasn’t any turbulence either.

So what was happening?

It seemed like the only people who knew were those who worked on this plane, but they weren’t telling anyone anything yet.

However, they were prepared to tell people who hadn’t obeyed their orders that they needed to comply, and that was why a stewardess made her way towards Will’s seat. His seatbelt was still unfastened around his waist, and while he was tapping away and seemingly having a pleasant time listening to his music, the stewardess was there to remind him that he had to follow orders.

Tapping the musician on the shoulder, the stewardess was trying her best to be gentle so that she didn’t frighten the passenger. But Will jumped up anyway, clearly having not expected to be touched, and as he pulled his headphones off, he asked what was going on.

‘I’m sorry, sir, but I need you to fasten your seatbelt, please.’

‘Is everything okay?’

‘Yes, it’s fine. But the captain has just requested everybody fasten their seatbelts for the time being.’

Will was just as curious as to why that was as every other passenger on this plane, but he did as he was told, and as he clipped his belt together, he listened out to see what he could deduce from the conversation going on around him.

Being in First Class meant that there were fewer people in this front part of the plane than at the back, so there wasn’t as much opportunity to hear people’s conversations. But Will could hear one woman speaking loudly ahead of him. He recognised the voice as belonging to the woman who had complained about being chilly not long after take-off, and as Will remembered it, she had been quite rude to the staff who had been trying to look after her. Now it seemed like she was being rude again, demanding to know what was happening and not giving the cabin crew around her the chance to get away with not giving her an explanation.

‘This isn’t good enough. Do you know
